What is involved in running a catering company

Most small cafes like the idea of branching out from their lunch or supper menu and offering a full service catering service. There are both pros and cons when doing this but the decision is typically a good one. However, there are a few things that are involved with running a catering business that not many local cafes are aware of. Here are some of the things to keep my mind when you’re getting into your local catering business (such as catering in Halifax).

Your target market changes

You’ll notice a shift from dealing with the smiles of your existing market and customer base to more of a business to business environment. You’ll be working with a lot of event planners and corporate businesses – which means more responsibility and accountability.

Say goodbye to your set hours

This is especially true if you were a local restaurant. Take The Lockside Canteen for example, they are located here:

Lemon Dogs Tacos & Lemonade
54 Locks Rd,
Dartmouth, NS

Their old business hours used to be 11AM until 7PM, but now with the addition of their Halifax catering service, they are now open whenever they need to be.

Catering can certainly be a great business choice. However, it’s important that you way the pros and cons before getting too involved.
